Debates continue in the House over the exact wording of the Illinois concealed carry legislation to be passed. Another debate that rages is over the fees to be charged for a permit and the cost of administering the program as a whole.
Proposed fees have ranges from $25 to $100. Each one claims to be enough for the program to track, check and print permits. This article explains that as many as 300,000 people are expected to request a permit and this will cost the state millions in system upgrade and personnel time. There is also some skepticism over how much of the fees will go to upgrades and unnecessary expenditures instead of pure administration.
In a cash-strapped state like Illinois, this debate will not be one to settle quickly.
